Ventureprise works with student, faculty, and community innovators in the acceleration of their ideas and in the formation of start-up companies. Ventureprise delivers entrepreneurial training programs, manages the 49er Foundry student business incubator and the Ventureprise Launch program.
UNC Charlotte’s Office of Research Commercialization and Development (ORCD) is one of the country’s best in putting intellectual property to work. The office works with faculty, staff, and students to protect university innovations and bring them to market.
Joining Ms. Smailes, Mr. Fach, and Mr. Collins for this panel discussion will be Dr. Thomas Schmedake (Associate Professor of Chemistry,UNC Charlotte), Dr. Michael Walter (Associate Professor of Chemistry, UNC Charlotte), and Margaret Kocherga (Ph.D candidate in Nanoscale Science, UNC Charlotte).
Devin Collins, Ventureprise Interim Executive Director, joined UNC Charlotte in 2010. He leads the Ventureprise Entrepreneurship and Innovation Center at UNC Charlotte. Mr. Collins serves as the principal investigator for UNC Charlotte’s NSF I-Corps Site and its NC IDEA Foundation Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Partner grant. He has also been a PI on an NSF STTR/SBIR grant. Prior to joining the University, Mr. Collins was an entrepreneur and involved with several early-stage innovation driven enterprises. Mr. Collins received his undergraduate degree from Babson College and his master’s degree from American University.
Brad Fach has nineteen years of patent and intellectual property management experience and holds advanced degrees in biotechnology and an MBA. He is experienced in drafting, filing, and prosecuting patents with the US Patent and Trademark Office and the World IP Office. Mr. Fach has twelve years experience negotiating and drafting patent license agreements, sponsored research agreements between universities and companies, material transfer agreements, and non-disclosure agreements. Mr. Fach is also a successful inventor and entrepreneur and sold his first company back in 2007.
Laura Smailes, Assistant Director at Ventureprise at UNC Charlotte, starting in 2017. Her passion for the entrepreneurial community began after she graduated from UNC Charlotte with her Master’s Degree in Communication Studies. Ms. Smailes formed a startup with two UNC Charlotte engineers, working on a wave powered desalination system to provide clean water to areas in need. With previous corporate communication experience ranging from producing a morning radio talk show to sales and marketing, she managed to transition these skills into the successful launch of the Charlotte startup company. Ms. Smailes has had the privilege of participating several entrepreneurial programs, including both the regional Ventureprise Launch and NSF National I-Corps programming.
